What to Expect With an Immediate Denture

By Wisdom Dentures

Having teeth removed is uncomfortable enough, without the added inconvenience of being without them. Fortunately, this is solved with an immediate denture – fitted directly after tooth extraction.

An immediate denture offers great relief, although it may take some getting used to. Made before your tooth extraction, and fitted straight after, you can expect to feel some discomfort. But, with simple care and perseverance, you will adapt to your new denture in no time.

Getting started

Your dental prosthetist will take an impression of your upper and lower teeth to record your mouth shape and bite. They will also determine the perfect tooth shape and shade for your new denture. It will be made and delivered in time for your extraction appointment.

The first 24 hours

Inserting a denture immediately after extracting teeth means it’s normal to experience some sore spots. These may occur at the extraction site or be caused by the denture rubbing on your gums.

Wear your denture continually for the first 24 hours to help alleviate pain. The denture covers your extraction site and may reduce the likelihood of dry socket. It can also help to contain swelling.

On the second day, wash your denture and rinse your mouth in warm salty water. Reinsert your denture immediately after cleaning to prevent swelling and avoid further difficulty or pain.

Learning to adapt

It’s normal to find eating, drinking and speaking a little difficult. Begin with soft foods, in small bite-sized pieces, on either side of your mouth. You can practice speaking by reading a magazine out loud. You’ll soon learn what you can and can’t do with your new denture.

You’ll need a follow-up appointment four to five days after surgery so your dental prosthetist can check on your progress. A reline adjustment will ensure your denture fit is as comfortable as possible.
